Super PACs, or "independent-expenditure-only committees," are political action committees that can raise and spend unlimited amounts of money from corporations, unions, associations, and individuals to finance independent political expenditures. They cannot coordinate directly with candidates or political parties, a key distinction from traditional PACs. However, the unlimited financial contributions they can receive and spend on behalf of candidates can lead to concerns about the potential for undue influence on politicians. This is a form of indirect "bribery," as wealthy individuals and corporations can use Super PACs to support political campaigns in a way that might sway the decisions of elected officials.

Citizen United = Bad

The Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (2010) decision by the U.S. Supreme Court has significant implications and has been subject to considerable debate. Key issues include:

  1. Corporate Personhood and Free Speech: The ruling reinforced that corporations have the same rights to political speech as individuals, allowing them to spend unlimited amounts on political campaigns.
  2. Campaign Finance Deregulation: This led to a dramatic increase in political spending, particularly through Super PACs, which can raise and spend unlimited funds from corporations, unions, and individuals.
  3. Influence of Wealthy Donors: Critics argue that it gives disproportionate power to wealthy donors and corporations, undermining the democratic principle of equality in political discourse.
  4. Transparency Concerns: There are concerns about lack of transparency, as some political spending can be done without full disclosure of the funding sources.
  5. Impact on Political Landscape: The decision is believed to have significantly altered the American political landscape, potentially leading to increased polarization and impacting legislative and electoral outcomes.

The decision remains a contentious issue in American politics, with ongoing debates about its impact on democracy and political equality.
